Troubleshoot Screen Sharing Issues

Updated over 2 years ago

If your webinar has been enabled for screen share.
Here is how to troubleshoot the common screen-sharing issues.

Update your browser:

First, make sure you are using a supported HTML5-capable browser.
Be sure to update your browser to get the latest software fixes.

Common issues:

I am not seeing the screen sharing start icon.

The screen-sharing start icon only shows up when the webinar has the screen-sharing feature enabled. Try the following options:

  • Open Scheduler and verify that the webinar has the screen-sharing feature enabled

  • If it is enabled, refresh your page to reload.

My screen sharing does not start

If you are on macOS, your browser needs access to the Screen Recording.

Click the Apple menu > System Preferences or System Settings > click on Security & Privacy or Privacy and Security, find and click Screen Recording. Select the checkbox next to your browser to allow it to access Screen Recording.

My screen sharing is choppy and laggy

There are several reasons why the screen sharing may lag.

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot.

Step 1: Check if you have a strong connection

The screen-sharing quality is 1080p. It requires a very strong network connection. A poor network will not be able to handle the bandwidth needed for screen sharing.

  • Run a speed test to ensure you have a strong network connection and low latency.

  • Use a wired connection, if available.

  • Use a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection instead of the more heavily used 2.4 GHz band.

Step 2: Disconnect from VPN

If you are connected with VPN, the VPN routes traffic through an additional network location and may delay video transmission to and from your computer, which can cause lag.

Step 3: Close other browser tabs and applications

Screen sharing is a resource-intensive task. If you are running other browser tabs and applications while screen sharing, they may be using up resources that screen sharing needs, which can cause lag.

Step 4: Check hardware acceleration

Browser’s hardware acceleration is a feature that uses your graphics card to process video streams. However, if this feature is not working correctly, it can also lead to lag.

Step 5: Clear browser cache and restart your browser

When your browser cache memory is filled up, its performance will be affected while you are screen sharing which can cause lag. Try with the following options:

  • Clear browser cache

  • Restart your browser

    • Chrome: Type in chrome://restart to fully restart your Chrome

    • Microsoft Edge: Type in edge://restart to fully restart your Edge

    • Firefox: Type in about:profiles and then click Restart normally…
